At first glance it looks similar, it turns out that between es cendol and es dawet have several differences. Starting from the origin, ingredients to how they are made. In Indonesia, there are variants of mixed ice which are very popular, namely cendol ice and dawet ice. However, unfortunately there are still many people who find it difficult to distinguish which is ice cendol and which is ice dawet.
Some even think that the two ices are one and the same type. At first glance, both cendol and dawet ice look the same. Both are green, long and served with coconut milk sauce with sweet sticky coconut sugar. However, there are several things that make the difference between the two. Here are 5 differentiators.
1. Origin
The difference between ice cendol and es dawet can be seen from their origins. Based on where the ice comes from, it’s clear that the two are very different. Cendol ice is ice originating from Sunda, West Java.
While dawet ice comes from Banjarnegara, Central Java. That is also written a lot on the dawet ice seller’s cart. Usually on top of the cart is written ‘Dawet Ayu Banjarnegara’
2. Main Materials Used
The difference between ice condol and ice dawet is also in the main ingredients used. Even though they both look greenish, the materials used are very different. Cendol ice is made from hunkwe flour or green bean flour.
Then the flour is given a green color using food coloring or pandan suji leaf water. In contrast to dawet ice which uses ingredients in the form of rice flour. To produce a green color, the heavy flour is then topped with suji leaves.
3. Manufacturing Process
Besides being both green, cendol and dawet also have the same shape. Cendol ice and dawet ice are known for their elongated shape. It turns out that to form it like that, it goes through a different manufacturing process.
For cendol ice, the dough from hunkwe flour is molded using a special printer. It looks like a long glass with holes under it. Equipped with a suppressor cap. With this tool, usually produce cendol with a longer size than dawet ice. Meanwhile, dawet ice is printed using a simple filter.
The dawet dough is poured using a hollow sieve. Then, shake the sieve so that the dawet mixture falls through the small cavities there. Therefore, the dawet shape at the ends looks more pointed.
4. Texture
Because the main ingredients used are different, the texture of the two types of ice is also different. Cendol ice has a texture that is more chewy when bitten. The chewy sensation is produced from the hunkwe flour used.
Meanwhile, dawet ice has a softer and smoother texture. In addition, for its thickness, dawet ice is usually thicker than cendol ice. Besides being given brown sugar syrup, cendol ice is usually added with pieces of jackfruit. While dawet is usually added with sticky tape.
So, have you tried drinking dawet ice and cendol ice while on vacation to Indonesia?
