An Indonesian citizen who was arrested in a terrorism case in Malaysia, who allegedly planned the murder of the former prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad, has been sentenced to four years in prison. “The trial is over and the sentence has been decided. 4 years (imprisonment),” said the representative of the Social and Cultural Information of the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Yoshi, when contacted by CNNIndonesia.com, Monday (29/3).

According to Yoshi, the arrest of the Indonesian citizen took place last year. During the legal process, the Indonesian Embassy was also given access to meet the convicted person. According to the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Teuku Faizasyah, the arrest of the Indonesian citizen took place in January 2020. “However, it has only recently become the attention of the Malaysian public,” said Faizasyah.

However, the WNI’s initials were kept secret. According to the statement by the Chief of the Malaysian Police, Inspector General Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador, there were six people who were arrested in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Perak and Penang on January 6 and 7, 2020 because they were suspected of being involved with the terrorist group Anshorullah At Tauhid who submitted to ISIS.

One of those arrested was an Indonesian citizen. Meanwhile, three other people were released on the prosecutor’s orders. According to Hamid, the terrorist cell organization was formed in 2019. Hamid said the investigation revealed the three men threatened to kill Mahathir and several former cabinet members, namely former Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, former minister Datuk Seri Dr. Mujahid Yuso Rawa, and former Attorney General Tommy Thomas.

The reason is because they are seen as a secular government. During the raid on the convicts, the Malaysian anti-terrorist unit confiscated ISIS machetes, daggers and flags. Apart from that, the trio also planned to attack casinos in the Genting Highlands and breweries in the Klang Valley.
