Yogyakarta is one of the regions in Indonesia which is very well known in the fields of education, tourism and culture. This area is of course very pleasant to be a place to spend your vacation time.
In Yogyakarta, many tourist areas have been visited and have historical value. One of the historical areas in Yogyakarta is Vredeburg Fort. The fort is closely related to the existence of the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Palace.
According to history, on February 13, 1755, there was the Giyanti Agreement which succeeded in resolving the feud between Susuhunan Pakubuwono III and Prince Mangkubumi (the future Sultan Hamengku Buwono I) which was the result of Dutch politics who always wanted to interfere in the domestic affairs of the Javanese kings at that time.
Seeing the rapid progress of the kraton which was established by Sultan Hamengkubuwono I, a sense of concern from the Dutch began to arise. The Dutch proposed to the sultan to be allowed to build a fort near the palace.
The fort was built on the pretext that the Dutch could maintain the security of the palace and its surroundings. However, behind this pretext, the real intention of the Dutch was to make it easier to control all developments that took place within the palace.
The location of the fort, which is only one cannon firing distance from the palace and its location facing the main road to the palace, is an indication that the function of the fort can be used as a fortress for strategy, intimidation, attack and blockade.
It can be said that the establishment of the fort was intended as a precaution if at any time the Sultan turned his head against the Dutch. The magnitude of the power hidden behind the political contract that was born in every agreement with the Dutch seemed to be a force that was difficult to resist by any indigenous leader during the Dutch colonial period.
This included Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono I. Therefore the request for permission from the Netherlands to build the fort was granted. So, to better understand its history, it’s better to just visit this historic area. It’s not bad when you spend your vacation, of course you can learn history while experiencing Indonesia in ancient times.
