Mexico is a predominantly Catholic country. However, in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, there are Mayans who embraced Islam.
In the population census carried out in 2010, there are about 2,500 Muslims in Mexico, which is less than 0.01% of the total population.
However, in Chiapas, Islam flourished.
Like Christianity, Islam in Mexico was brought by the Spaniards. The difference is, Christianity was spread in the 12th century, Islam only entered Mexico in the 1990s by the Murabitun community led by Abdalqadir as-Sufi.
One of the imams in Chiapas, Ibrahim Chechev, said he converted to Islam at the age of 15.
“What I remember was seeing a group of people sitting cross-legged on the floor and singing something in a language I didn’t understand. That’s what attracted me,” he said.
“Then I invited my father, mother, sister, uncle, grandfather and friends. Now they are all Muslim and participate in spreading Islam,” he added.
Ibrahim said that his family always welcomes guests with open arms.
“The door to our house is always open to anyone who wants to learn about Islam,” he said.
