How many Muslims are currently scattered in various countries? This question is certainly intriguing and often comes to mind. There is no recent data regarding the estimated population of followers of each religion.
However, a new comprehensive demographic study conducted in 2012, by the Pew Research Center on Religion & Public Life Forum in more than 230 countries found that eight out of ten people worldwide identify with a particular religious group.
Based on an analysis of more than 2,500 censuses, surveys and population registers, the following conclusions were found:
1. Christians 2.2 billion people (32 percent of the world’s population),
2. Muslims 6 billion people (23 percent)
3. Hindu 1 billion people (15 percent)
4.Buddhist nearly 500 million people (7 percent)
5. Jews, 14 million people (0.2 percent) worldwide in 2010
In addition, more than 400 million people (6 percent) adhere to traditional religions. This includes traditional African religions, Chinese folk religion, Native American religions and Australian aboriginal religions.
The remaining 58 million people (one percent) are estimated to adhere to other religions, including the Baha’i faith, Jainism, Sikhism, Shintoism, Taoism, Tenrikyo, Wicca, and Zoroastrianism.
At the same time, the study also found that one in six populations worldwide (1.1 billion, or 16 percent) has no religious affiliation.
This survey shows that many unaffiliated hold some religious or spiritual beliefs (such as belief in God or a universal spirit) even though they do not identify with any specific beliefs.
